Anita’s Vintage Inspired Pinwheel Block Quilt

When we talk about classic quilt blocks, I feel like you can never leave out the pinwheel block. I see this block in so many quilts representing so many different styles. And I’ve loved seeing the block evolve as quilters play with lots of different variations on the pinwheel. Today I wanted to share with you this sweet quilt by Anita. Can you tell she had lots of fun playing with the pinwheel block?

Isn’t it interesting how she placed the little pinwheel block inside of the bigger one. I feel like it added an extra dimension to her quilt. Doesn’t it look like the pinwheels are coming out of the quilt? It also reminds me of pinwheels with two colored paper that’s super high contrast. It really allows you to admire all the movement and colors in the quilt.

Speaking of the colors, I love the muted color scheme in her quilt. From a distance, the fabrics in the quilt look like solids. But once you get up close you realize they’re all vintage inspired prints! The orange fabrics all have sweet little flowers, the greens have a lovely grid design, and the cream fabric has pincushions. Or are they tomatoes? It’s hard to tell sometimes!

I’ve quilted several quilts for Anita in the last couple of years. She usually prefers simple quilting like a wide open meander. I think the simple meander was the best quilting choice for her quilt. It helps to let the quilting sink in so you can appreciate the piecing and fabrics.

I also adored the backing fabric she picked out! She found this tone on tone floral quilt backing fabric here in the shop. It’s super sweet and simple, just like Anita’s quilt!

I decided to quilt Anita’s pinwheel block quilt with Omni Light Tan. This quilt feels very vintage so I wanted a thread that fits the theme. Omni is a polyester thread, but it has a matte finish and a cotton look. This thread looks like a thread that would have been used in previous years but still runs beautifully on my APQS Millie longarm machine.

Anita’s vintage inspired pinwheel quilt turned out beautiful! I hope she loves snuggling with it!
